Thank you for signing our #TranslatorsOnTheCover letter of intent. The letter has had an overwhelming response with over 1,900 signatories to date and has already had an impact. On 12 October, Pan Macmillan UK announced that, in future, translators will be acknowledged “on the book cover and all promotional materials”.

Your support helped make this happen.

We now need to follow up on the promise we made in the letter by asking our own publishers and agents to put the names of our translators on the front cover of our translated work wherever possible. Do write directly to ask them and copy us in on any responses.

When contacting your agent and publisher, you might find it useful to use a version of the wording below, while also referring to the letter of intent.

To send to your publisher

I wish to ensure that all translators of my work are credited with due prominence. I hope you will agree to use best endeavours when negotiating translation rights to include a clause requiring any licensees to ensure that any licensee prints the name of the Translator along with my name with due prominence on the front cover or dust jacket of all editions of the book in any language, and in all publicity material (catalogues, advertisements, website etc.) concerning it, and that the name of the Translator is mentioned in connection with all reviews of and quotations from the Translation. and shall use their best endeavours to ensure that this undertaking is adhered to in other editions of the Translation and in all sublicenses, if any.

El 14 de octubre, Livres Hebdo publicó en su Tribuna la Carta abierta de la Asociación de Traductores Literarios de Francia, de la que soy miembro desde hace varios años, a los jurados de los premios de literatura extranjera. Aquí va el texto, que he traducido al español:

Corinna Gepner, Presidenta de la Asociación de Traductores Literarios de Francia (ATLF).

Todos los años, algunos de ustedes otorgan premios a obras literarias extranjeras traducidas al francés. Un trabajo previo de lectura y de discusión les habrá permitido apreciar el universo de sus autores, su imaginario, su inventiva estilística… Sin embargo, ninguno de estos aspectos les llega de manera directa. Para leerlos, necesitan la mediación de un traductor, que hace uso de todo su conocimiento y oficio y de todo su talento para dejar oír la voz de dichos autores. Pese a ello, los nombres de los traductores no aparecen –o lo hacen muy ocasionalmente— en sus comunicados de prensa, ya se trate de la lista de autores finalistas o del palmarés.

Nos parecería inconcebible hablar de una obra artística sin señalar el nombre de su autor. En cambio, es lo que ocurre cuando se omite el del traductor: aunque no es el autor del libro, sí lo es del texto traducido.

Que todo traductor es un autor es un hecho que recoge el código de la propiedad intelectual. Que sea reconocido como tal no es aún un hecho establecido. En la actualidad, muchas personas se interesan por el trabajo del traductor, por las particularidades de su contribución literaria y desean saber más para hacerle preguntas y escucharle.

No es una casualidad que recientemente se haya organizado un festival en Gif-sur-Yvette enteramente dedicado a la traducción VO/VF [Versión Original/Versión Francesa], todo un programa que atrae cada vez a un mayor número de curiosos y entusiastas de la literatura extranjera. Concedamos entonces a cada cual lo que le corresponde.
